Okay, so my birthday was May 3rd and this is a smidge belated, but please don’t hold it against me. For those of you who were following WhittyJ.Com this time last year, you’ll know I like to give on my birthday rather than receive. As a child, birthdays were thrilling. I would spend the day thinking that the world centered around me (and my twin), and presents were very much welcomed and adored. Now that I’m older and my mom is no longer alive and hosting big birthday celebrations, I actually find myself quite sad and melancholy on my birthday. I’m sure that anyone who has lost a parent or guardian at a young age will tell you the same thing. Birthdays and holidays are tough- For me especially. I tend to feel overwhelmed with “mom memories” on these special days- Which makes the reality of no longer having the person who made these memories so happy all that more prevalent. This is why I choose to give each year. I find that while gifts are sweet and sometimes sentimental, giving brings me much more joy. In lieu of that, I plan on doing some sort of giveaway like this each birthday.
On to this year’s giveaway… I spent a good couple of weeks planning this year’s birthday giveaway. Ultimately, I wanted to choose something that I personally enjoy myself. This camera was the one thing that came to mind. I feel like I reiterate this constantly on social media, but I am not at all a photographer and certainly would never claim to be. I do happen to love snapping photos and capturing memories, though, and the Canon Rebel T5i was my first camera companion giving me the opportunity to do so. Most of the photos I take for my blog are taken with my T5i and I haven’t a single complaint about it. I’ve now upgraded my gear to include a Canon 5D Mark III, but honestly, I still tote the T5i around far more often. It’s my favorite camera, and I’m not sure if that’ll ever change. The good people at the Edina National Camera listened to my giveaway ideas and gave me an incredible deal on the Canon Rebel T6i and it’s 18-55mm kit lens. That being said, I am so excited to be giving away one of latest models of these bad boys. It’s been my trusty companion while traveling and has made my selfie game oh so very strong (I kid).
Anyway, this year’s giveaway is a little different. Recently, I met a lovely man named Robbie Macmillan. Robbie traveled to Rwanda as an International Relations and Politics student to study and research for his final year dissertation. Through this experience, he learned and grew through the harsh living conditions, out-of-reach schooling, and unattainable health coverage of those living on the coast of Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda. Proper schooling and health care is essentially nonexistent in these areas, and this inhumane reality is what prompted Robbie to do something- To do his part in making a difference. After much work and tireless research, Children of Rwanda was born. Children of Rwanda is a registered Scottish charity that provides financial assistance to families and children living in the villages of Ngoma and Kigarama. This financially supports the schooling and health care for children who weren’t before eligible to receive it. I know. Incredible. To date, Children of Rwanda has given over 100 children the opportunity to begin or continue their proper schooling, and granted nearly 300 individuals access to much needed health care. That is an amazing accomplishment.
Now, you’re probably wondering- Whitty J, where are you going with all of this? Well, it’s people like Robbie and charities like Children of Rwanda that truly make a positive difference to those on the lesser end of the current imbalance in our world. It’s inspiring and emotionally enriching learning about and meeting people so filled with determination and drive to make change. That being said, I wanted to incorporate the sharing of this charity into my giveaway. I want to do what I can to spread awareness of other humans’ unfortunate situations, and in turn draw more attention to people and causes that matter. These tiny little humans and their futures matter. This charity matters. And I want YOU to be a part of it.
There are several ways to enter this giveaway. Ideally, though, I would love for all entrants to read the entirety of this giveaway and learn about Children of Rwanda before entering. Nothing would make me happier than the genuine spreading of this charity and an increase in donations. In light of this, visiting Children of Rwanda on Facebook and liking the page are both worth one entry, and donating is worth five! Whether it be one dollar or one hundred dollars, it makes a difference in someone’s life. That’s such an incredible ability to have- to be able to positively effect another human’s life and future.
